 Archimedes

Archimedes (287-212 BC) was born in Syracuse, Sicily.

He studied at Alexandria in Egypt and whilst living in Egypt invented a machine to raise water from a lower to a higher level.

When the screw is turned, water is carried up the tube.

Archimedes is probably best known for his Principle: 'When a body is totally or partially immeresed in a fluid, it experiences an upthrust equal to the mass of fluid displaced'.   So if you fill your bath to the top and get in, the water overflows!
